What did your 18 year old self see you becoming?
I was already working as a freelance photographer’s assistant by 18, so I was already certain of my career in commercial photography.
What was the most interesting project you’ve worked on?
My best job was actually my first one. I was part of a team of 13 photographers hired to document the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, UT, for the organizing committee. I had the opportunity to work alongside renowned photographers like John Huet, David Burnett, and Sheila Metzner. At just 24, I was the youngest member of the team, and it truly felt like a trial by fire.
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you do?
I am an artist at heart. My hobbies include pottery, painting, and writing. I think my dream is just to retire as an artist and continue to create.
When you need it, what inspires you?
I love going to local museums and art galleries for inspiration.
What do you know now, you wish you’d known when you first started out?
I wish I had made a stronger effort to connect with my community and sought out more mentorship. I was fortunate to work with some incredible individuals who were very supportive and approachable, but I don’t think I reached out for their guidance enough.
What might surprise people about you?
I recently learned how to play tennis – like from never having played to thinking about it all the time. And no, I don’t want to play pickleball.
When was the last time you watched the sun rise?
Last week, on my way to the airport. It feels like I have traveled more miles on the road this year than at any other time in my life.
What superpower would you want? Feel free to invent one.
I wish I had a photographic memory.
What is your dream assignment?
Traveling the world for a year to capture pictures for a company calendar.
What celebrity (actor, writer, musician) would you most want to have dinner with?
Dolly Parton. She is an incredible and resilient person. She has a huge heart and has remained true to herself and her values throughout her career. Her success stems not only from her immense talent but also from her vision and ability to what is possible.
What are the top 2 things on your bucket list?
The top of my list is to complete a screenplay I have been working on for the last year. I feel like it is going to take me another 5 to get it done. And probably the second is to travel.
